Rio Tinto Self-Perform Tailings Dam Wall Raise Construction Project

Why were we engaged?

Concentis was engaged to source and recruit a team of leading project delivery personnel to operate as a contractor workforce on the construction of a tailings dam wall raise project in Weipa, FNQ. This was a self-performed project from the ground up.

What challenges led to engaging concentis?

1. As a self-perform project for an owners team the nature of the work was complex and detailed with no earthworks contractor.

2. A broad cross section of skills was required to enable the successful execution of the project.

3. Rio Tinto’s core business is mining not Construction so Concentis were required to resource the project delivery team that had both owners team and contractor experience.

4. Flexibility was essential given the project was scheduled to run for 14 months with no guarantee of further work beyond that.

Concentis Success

From a people perspective Concentis got the right people with the right skills and quickly. The scale of the job for acompany like Rio Tinto is unheard off, so given the quantity of work to be done, the people and skills were vitally important for the safety, schedule, and cost to enable successful delivery.

The client requested eight key positions to be filled across multiple disciplines. Our team successfully secured qualified candidates for all roles, ensuring the project maintained momentum.

The placements included:

  • H&S x2
  • Mechanical works supervisor x2
  • Civil Earthworks super x2
  • Project Engineer x2
