Key Trends – Project Management Recruitment in 2020

As the new year gets underway, it is the perfect time to take a closer look at some of the key trends set to shape project management recruitment in 2020. Understanding these trends will prove very useful for candidates looking to secure a new position or to take the next step in their career this year, along with clients looking to secure leading talent on their projects.

The three top trends we see defining the industry this year include:

1. An increase in permanent roles

A more stable forecast for the mining sector in 2020 will see the number of permanent positions on offer continue to increase. As market conditions improve so too will project approvals, giving employers greater confidence in maintaining permanent workforces on key projects.

Contracting remains an excellent way for candidates to get themselves in front of the right people to secure a permanent role. Many employers will continue to look towards their contractor workforce when positions become available. This approach reduces risk as the candidate’s performance, strengths and abilities are already known. Having a relationship with the hiring manager or a colleague working in the company who can provide a reference also offers a distinct advantage to candidates in a competitive marketplace.

2. Higher demand for Project Controllers and Engineers

The forecasted increase in project works is set to create a corresponding increase in the number of Project Controller and Project Engineering roles on offer. We expect to see demand across all three sectors – mining, energy and infrastructure – making it easier for candidates to move across industries and utilise their experience in a new area.

The increasingly competitive market means employers will also need to sharpen their focus on selling themselves to candidates. With more opportunities available, companies need to clearly communicate the advantages and benefits they can offer. Everything from role responsibilities and salary, to company culture and career progression will come into play.

3. Strong focus on inclusion and diversity

Inclusion and diversity have been high on leading employer’s selection criteria for several years now and that focus will continue in 2020. Fostering local engagement and connection on projects will continue to be an important aspect. This means a further reduction in FIFO roles in favour of positions based in a project’s local community. That, in turn, creates an advantage for Project Managers looking to re-locate to a regional or remote area to take the next step in their career.

As we contemplate the year ahead it is clear there are many exciting opportunities on the horizon for both clients and candidates across project management roles. Matching the top talent with leading companies will remain our focus and we look forward to working closely with you throughout the year.
