Countdown to 2032: The Workforce Behind Queensland’s Biggest Construction Opportunity

Countdown to 2032: The Workforce Behind Queensland’s Biggest Construction Opportunity Report

Queensland’s major infrastructure projects are accelerating, with Brisbane, the Gold Coast, and Sunshine Coast preparing for the 2032 Olympics. Our latest report, Countdown to 2032: The Workforce Behind Queensland’s Biggest Construction Opportunity, reveals that 80% of employers plan to grow their teams ahead of the 2026–2027 construction peak.
Yet, many are only planning one to three years ahead, short horizons that could challenge the state’s delivery capability.

The report highlights workforce shortages as the number-one pressure on Queensland’s infrastructure sector, with high demand for trades, engineers, project managers, and emerging skills in digital design and sustainability. While most organisations are investing in diversity, inclusion, and training, graduate and development pathways remain insufficient to meet future needs.

“Every bridge, rail line, and venue depends on the people behind it,” says our Managing Director Mark Medelis.
“Queensland needs to plan further ahead to attract, train, and retain the talent required to deliver the Games and the long-term infrastructure legacy that follows.”
