How to Create a Great Online Job Profile Using Linkedin and Seek

Recently on this blog, we spoke about personal branding and the importance of aligning your digital profile with the way you want the world, and particularly potential employers, to see you.

Now, I want to take that conversation a step further and explore some of the specific steps you can take to create a great online profile. A profile that capitalises on the opportunities available through two leading platforms heavily used by resourcing consultants and employers to identify top talent, but often overlooked by candidates and job seekers. These two platforms being LinkedIn and Seek Talent Search.

While most people are familiar with LinkedIn, not everyone is using the platform to its fullest potential. The same is true for Seek. Making just a few small changes on your profile can have a significant impact on the likelihood of employers looking for leading project talent finding you.

Gone are the days of placing a job ad and waiting patiently for great candidates to apply. Today, the process is much more proactive thanks to developments in technology. One example is the fact that a high percentage of the candidates we place here at Concentis are passively, rather than actively, looking for roles. They secure their ideal role after being approached, rather than applying for a role themselves.

One of the keys to securing your ideal role in today’s digitally-driven job market is ensuring that your profile can be easily found, and your online personal brand aligns with your CV.

Here are three tips to help you create a strong online profile via LinkedIn and Seek:

1. Focus on keywords

Find the exact keywords that best link to the role you desire and those that represent your experience and areas of expertise. For example, if you are a project manager with experience in the initial project stages include keywords such as pre-feasibility, feasibility, and front-end project experience. If your expertise is more focused on construction, use keywords such as project execution and project implementation.

Then, pepper these keywords throughout your LinkedIn and Seek profiles. The more relevant keywords you include, the more likely you are to appear on the radar of recruitment consultants and employers looking to fill leading roles in this area.

2. Complete your profile

It sounds obvious, but I am constantly surprised at how many job seekers haven’t taken the time to put their best foot forward by completing all sections of their profile. That means including a photograph on LinkedIn and writing an engaging snapshot to highlight your experience and career achievements in the ‘About’ section at the very top of your profile. This section is equivalent to your elevator pitch – the chance to sell yourself in 30 seconds. Don’t waste it, and remember, include keywords!

3. Focus on consistency and specifics

Are each of your online profiles telling the same story? While technology makes it easier for recruiters and potential employers to find you, it is also easier than ever before to spot inconsistencies. Dates, job titles and responsibilities that differ between your CV, LinkedIn and Seek profiles raise an instant red flag.

Another top tip is to be specific about your achievement and the scope of the projects you’ve worked on. This is another great way to incorporate keywords into your profiles, but it also highlights practical details that allow the person reading your profile to quickly determine if you are the ideal candidate they have been searching for.

Creating a strong online profile on LinkedIn and Seek is not difficult if you follow these guidelines. Just remember, in today’s digital job market, the initial keys to success often lie in utilising keywords to draw attention to your profile and ensuring your personal brand is consistent and telling the same story across all platforms.
