Set Up Your Space for a Flawless Video Interview: Tips for Success

As the world continues to embrace remote work, virtual interviews have become the norm for job seekers and hiring managers alike – even more so in industries like ours where sometimes the best talent can be a little further away than an in person interview allows.

Video calls, in particular, have become a popular way to connect and assess potential candidates in a slightly more laid back and personal way than a conference call where no one gets to “meet” face to face. However, just like an in-person interview, proper preparation is key to making a positive impression.

So – how do you prepare your space for a video interview?

If you have a home office, then you already have a potential spot to take the call. Work through the next few sections and see where you can make some improvements to your set up – or set something up from scratch!

Choose the Right Location

The first step in setting up your space for a video interview is choosing the right location. Select a well-lit area with minimal distractions. Avoid busy backgrounds, such as a cluttered room or a busy street outside your window. Ideally, choose a plain, neutral background or use a virtual background that is both professional and appropriate for the interview setting – providers such as Teams and Zoom offer reasonably generic ‘office’ backgrounds which work well on the platform.

Test Your Equipment

Before your video interview, it's crucial to test your equipment to ensure it's working properly. Check your camera, microphone, and speakers to make sure they are functioning well – you can use the in-built testing protocols that most providers offer or you can always call a friend! Test your internet connection as well to ensure a stable connection during the interview.

Being well-prepared technologically will help you avoid any technical glitches during the interview and project a professional image.

Top Tip: if you do experience an out of the blue tech issue – mention it ahead of time! A quick ‘I just want to let you know that my internet connection has been unstable this morning so I’d like to apologise in advance’ can help a lot. If you do have issues they’re already aware of it and won’t be taken by surprise, and if you don’t then you come across considerate and forward thinking.

Use Professional Virtual Backgrounds (if needed)

If you are unable to find a suitable location with a plain background, you can opt for virtual backgrounds. However, be cautious in selecting virtual backgrounds and choose ones that are professional and appropriate for the interview. Avoid using distracting or inappropriate backgrounds, as they can reflect negatively on your professionalism.

Optimise Lighting

Proper lighting can influence a successful video interview. Avoid harsh overhead lighting or backlighting, which can create unflattering shadows or silhouettes. Instead, opt for natural lighting from a window or use soft, diffused lighting sources like lamps or ring lights to illuminate your face evenly. Well-lit interviews help the interviewer see your facial expressions and convey professionalism. While it’s not the most important thing on interview day, it can help add a professional touch and give you confidence that people are actually seeing you.

Dress Professionally

Just because it's a virtual interview doesn't mean you should dress casually. Dress professionally from head to toe, as you would for an in-person interview. Choose solid, neutral colours that contrast well with your background – this can also help virtual backgrounds run smoothly. Avoid busy patterns, ‘witty’ ties, or flashy jewellery that might be distracting. Dressing professionally will not only help you feel confident but also show the interviewer that you take the interview seriously.

Minimise Distractions

During a Zoom interview, it's essential to minimise distractions in your environment. Put your phone on silent and keep it out of reach. Close any unnecessary tabs or applications on your computer to avoid distractions. Inform your household members or roommates that you have an important interview and need uninterrupted time – this includes pets. Creating a distraction-free environment will allow you to focus on the interview and make a positive impression.

Be Mindful of Body Language

Body language plays a significant role in all interviews – but as a virtual interview lacks an aspect of personal contact, it can be even more important online. Sit up straight, maintain eye contact by looking at the camera, and nod to show engagement. Avoid excessive hand gestures or fidgeting, as it can be distracting. Being mindful of your body language will help you establish a connection with the interviewer and leave a positive impression.

Top Tip: if you know that you’re a fidgeter, position the camera strategically so that a jiggling leg or flicking pen isn’t visible. Just be sure not to distract yourself from the task at hand.

Be Prepared

Just like any other interview, you should be adequately prepared for your virtual interview. Research the company, the role, and the interviewer. Prepare thoughtful answers to common interview questions and have your resume and any relevant documents handy for reference. Be ready to share your skills, experiences and how you can contribute to the organisation. Being prepared will demonstrate your professionalism and readiness for the position.

There you have it

Setting up your space for a Zoom interview requires careful consideration of location, equipment, lighting, attire and minimising distractions. Aside from the format, all our usual tips for interviewees apply - remember to be mindful of your body language, be well-prepared and to relax!
